The maxillary sinuses are empty spaces of air found behind your cheeks and above your upper teeth. Only the teeth and a thin layer of bone are all that separate the sinuses from the mouth. When a patient loses a tooth, the thin layer of bone left is not substantial enough to support a dental implant. To create a study base for a dental implant, sinus augmentation may be required. Sinus augmentation creates space in the sinuses to allow new bone to form. The new, strong bone, is what will serve as the base for the dental implant. Without this treatment, the only option to replace missing top-jaw teeth would be dentures that covers the whole palate!
There are many reasons a tooth may require extraction, or removal. Pain, infection, bone loss and restorative treatment facilitation are all potential reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted.
